About
Mufti Mahmood Suliman completed his ʿĀlimiyyah studies at Madrasatul Arabiyyatul Islaamiyyah in Azaadville, then specialised in fiqh and fatāwā at Darul Iftaā Mahmudiyyah in Durban under the late Mufti Ebrahim Desai.
Alongside issuing fatāwā and teaching, his work has moved steadily into Islamic finance: advisory, research and training inside the industry rather than commentary on it. He was the Shariah scholar at HBZ Bank and is currently Shariah manager at FNB South Africa.
On the Amanah bench that combination lands where it matters most — between a ruling on paper and a bank that has to operate it on Monday morning.
How Mufti Mahmood works
- Trained in the dār al-iftāʾ method. Positions traced to the underlying evidence before they are traced to precedent.
- Inside the institution, not beside it. Years spent as a bank’s own scholar, where a ruling has to survive contact with operations.
- Teaches what he rules. Reasoning written so the people who have to apply it can follow it.
The rest of the bench.
