About
Dr. Aznan Hasan is an associate professor at the Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance at IIUM, founding president of the Association of Shariah Advisors in Islamic Finance, and deputy chairman of the Shariah Advisory Council at Malaysia’s Securities Commission.
He sits on the Shariah boards of AAOIFI in Bahrain and the Higher Shariah Authority at the Central Bank of the UAE, alongside HSBC Amanah, Standard Chartered in the DIFC, Bank Nizwa in Oman and Malaysia’s Employees Provident Fund. More than fifty published research papers sit behind that.
On the Amanah bench his work is concentrated in capital markets and sukuk.
That means the questions that decide an issuance rather than describe it: whether a true sale actually happened, what the purchase undertaking does to investor recourse, and whether the asset pool is identified well enough for anyone to claim against it.
He read Shariah at Al-Azhar, took his master’s at Cairo University and his doctorate at the University of Wales, Lampeter.
He also carries much of the firm’s standards engagement — reading exposure drafts and consultations closely enough to respond to them properly.
How Dr. Aznan works
- Starts at recourse. What investors can reach when things go wrong is the fastest read on a structure.
- Distinguishes practice from principle. Where the market has drifted, he says so rather than treating drift as precedent.
- Engages the standard-setters. Responses to drafts and consultations, on the record and under his own name.
